Today, students shared their final product of their family story- their HARDCOVER BOOKS! They are so excited to be sharing their second book they've written and illustrated this year. These family stories are true stories that they turned into narrative pieces by adding details, dialogue, and figurative language. They wrote multiple drafts of the story using revision and editing techniques. They are so proud to be taking home their books today to show off!
Today in Hands-on-Nature, our guest teachers taught us about raptors- more specifically owls! We had a puppet show put on by the fifth graders to teach us about their characteristics and the ways they hunt. Then, students took apart pellets to discover what an owl might eat! Not sure what a pellet is? Ask your fifth grader!!
Today marks the first day of our Fantasy Book Clubs unit! Students wrote down their top three book choices from nine options of fantasy genre books. Today, they oriented themselves to their new novel. They studied the cover, read the back blurb, and the first chapter. They gathered all sorts of information and clues to bring to their book clubs next week. Great job, radiant readers!
Today we were SO lucky to celebrate one of our classmates, Anish, going to Disney over vacation! His wish was granted by the Make-A-Wish foundation! He will be going with his family. He wanted to have his reveal party at school with all of his friends in Room 12. We enjoyed treats and watched some funny short films of his favorite character, Mickey Mouse! It was such a fun experience!
On Friday, our class earned a PBIS celebration! We filled our Marky Moose tank and voted for a class sing-a-long. Students had fun singing and dancing to a variety of songs, even when they were watching the karaoke on a small screen!
In Engineering Design, students have been investigating different ways to design and test their creations. Yesterday, they learned about Rube Goldberg. They watched a few videos of Rube Goldberg machines, and then they attempted to make one on their own! Their task was the get a marble into a cup going through at least one toilet paper or paper towel roll. Needless to say, all groups learned the value of perseverance during this activity!
Last week, students worked with their Writer's Workshop partners to assess their work. This is a fresh piece that they wrote about a story that happened to them (a personal narrative). They will use this piece to decide where they need to grow the most as a writer during this unit. They did an amazing job being supportive, encouraging, and positive as they reviewed each other's work. It was a heartwarming sight to hear and see!
Today was the first day of skiing with Mr. Day! He is so excited to be able to get out and enjoy the snow. What a gorgeous, sunny day the students had to experience this!
Today we had the amazing opportunity to go to a UVM Women's Basketball game! Check out our smiling faces!!!
Today we made snowflakes with our bus buddies! We had so much fun helping them create crafts that they were proud to take home. We ended up with some to decorate our classroom with, too! Take a look at the fun we had...
